[ Volcanic rock ]

“Merge the two with an impact” This is the vision I saw with recinto, the black lava rock, and the barro clay interacting with each other. Together this clash of materials creates a unified elegant design where the interaction  between small lava fragments and smooth polished clay produces an unexpected texture making each tile a one of a kind piece.

Many of the lava rocks used in this process can weight up to 500 plus kilograms. This lava rock is transported for hundreds of kilometers to the artisan’s shop where his expertise and talent start by chipping off smaller pieces. He then smashes them with a hammer while protecting the rock with a cloth. This helps collect the small rock fragments which then go through a strainer that helps eliminate the smallest particles and keep only what will be used for the Xanamu tile.

sound experience

Recinto rock was used in Mesoamerican cultures as a building material for temples, for cooking tools such as Molcajete, Metate and in sculptures.
